Financial Advice Services with Western Financial

The Plan offers its members access to discounted financial advice services through Western Financial.

This service has been carefully selected to ensure members receive independent, low cost and quality advice with no commissions to planners or institutions. Fees can also be paid directly from your super with no immediate out of pocket expense.

Why should you use this service?

Financial planning is about getting the most out of your money and enjoying the comfort of knowing that you have a plan to make your retirement suit your needs.

Western Financial can provide you with the advice you need to make the most of your investments during your working life. They employ fully qualified and experienced financial planners, who are familiar with the operations of the Plan and understand the government employee's super environment.

Western Financial are experts on Water Corporation Superannuation Plan and GESB products.

Who should get advice?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Will I have enough to retire on?
  • How much will I need to retire on?
  • Have I got the right amount of insurance cover?
  • Have I selected the right investment options for my risk profile?
  • Am I taking advantage of the extra employer contributions?
  • Am I eligible for the government co-contribution?
  • Am I salary sacrificing what I can afford?
  • Do I know what the new contribution caps are?
  • Have I consolidated all my super accounts?
  • Does my spouse have a super account?
  • Could I benefit from a transition to retirement income stream i.e. draw on my super whilst I continue to work?

If you are uncertain of the answer to any of these issues, you could probably benefit from some advice. If you are 55 years of age or older, advice should be high on your priority list.

What does the advice cover?

Advice is limited to matters within super, which include:

  • Taxation
  • Centrelink entitlements
  • Consolidation of multiple super accounts
  • Contributions optimising, income streams, transitional income streams
  • Retirement projections
  • Insurance
  • Salary sacrifice
  • Maximising super as a means of supplementing your retirement
  • KiwiSaver Transfers
  • Advice outside of superannuation is also available. Please discuss this with Western Financial.

What does it cost?

The advice will be on a fee-for-service basis. Our aim is to make it as affordable as possible to all members.You can also pay your superannuation advice fee directly from your Water Corporation Superannuation Plan account, allowing you to save money by paying from your before-income-tax dollars.

The initial consultation will be free and will cover the type and detail of the advice required. From this, you will be provided a quote for the relevant services. If you choose to proceed, the cost of the advice will be deducted from your super account.

If you choose to receive personal financial advice, the adviser will give you a Statement of Advice (SOA), which outlines the information the advice is based upon, your objectives, recommendations on how to achieve those objectives and details of any fees or costs.

Prices depend on the scope of advice and a full quotation is provvided before proceeding. Full financial plans start at $2,200 plus GST.

Personal advice outside of super

Western Financial also provides personal advice relating to non-super issues. This will be undertaken as a separate service to members utilising a special Financial Services Guide and fee structure. The fees for these services will need to be paid separately by individuals.

What are the steps in the process?

Step 1 - Assess

Everyone's circumstances are different. So, it's important that you first meet with your planner and discuss your situation.

Your first meeting involves collecting information about you and your financial situation, including super. It's also an opportunity to discuss your needs, objectives, risk profile, investment options and the characteristics of the different asset classes.

Other discussion points will include, estate planning arrangements, investment strategies and explain the benefits and possible risks involved, to ensure that you understand them.

Step 2 -Plan

Your planner will prepare a personal financial plan, based on the information you've provided.

This will recommend how to arrange your super and any other funds, to help achieve your desired retirement lifestyle.

Step 3 - Implement

After you've received your financial plan, you'll have plenty of time to review it with your planner to ensure you're comfortable with it.

Once you're ready to retire, your financial planner will then help you to complete all the paperwork and implement all the arrangements.

Step 4 - Follow up

Financial planning is a partnership that continues, even when you've retired. That's why Western Financial will maintain contact with you throughout your employment and retirement.

To ensure that your plan remains relevant, you can also select the ongoing review package for $770 per annum for a single person. This is generally if your circumstances are more complex and you need make regular adjustments.
